Grocery shopping in Shanghai

I prefer the French chain Carrefour ahead of most other available choices in Shanghai. After many years in China I have learned to avoid going to these stores at peak times. If you visit the stores after work on a weekday you will quickly realize your mistake when you hear the saleswomen on microphones screaming about the yogurts and milk they are selling, when you are pushing your way thru the crowded, hellish and stressful aisles.

Screaming saleswomen, hellish aisles together with the not logical layout of the stores are three good reasons to avoid them during rush hours. Go there in the early morning and take your time to find the stuff you are looking for, don’t rely on the salespeople for any constructive help on finding products.

If I only need to buy a few things I prefer to pop into Lianhua, 联华. Lianhua is a typical basic local grocery store, they are usually within walking distance from most apartment buildings. They are really convenient for spontaneous and unplanned purchasing as well as quick shopping of small daily necessities.

The most unpleasant place to do grocery shopping is without a doubt the local wet markets. These are markets where everything is fresh and on display, meat, fish and vegetables of all kinds. Looks like a zoo and smells like a zoo. The shopping is done according to weight and everything is unpacked. Like another blogger wrote, some people love wet markets and some don’t. I really don’t.

Moon Space Coffee Shop

Today we went to the Moon Space Coffee Shop and ate waffles for breakfast. My five, soon to be six, year-old love waffles so the two we bought were gone quicker than you can say waffle.

Moon Space is a very nice and family oriented coffee shop with an indoor play area for younger children and a sort of library with a wide range of books. I didn’t really understand the rules of borrow books, but I understood that there are two options, deposit 300 RMB and you can borrow X number of books for x number of days. Or deposit 500 and be able to borrow more books for a longer period of time. Most books are in Chinese, so not so suitable for me to borrow any books anyway.

The waffles are great and the cappucino as well. The other choices on the menu seems to be not that great, I have tried pizza, pasta and garlic bread. The food is of lower quality and small portions and VERY expensive to be in Shanghai.

I have been to the Moon Space shop several times before without the children because it is really a nice location to do work, the WIFI is for free and the speed suprisingly good.

If you are in the Jinqiao area, then go check it out on Biyun Road 1096.

Knistad Herrgard

I am sitting in Shanghai and reading online and is happy to see the positive article about Knistad Herrgard. My favorite place to go in summer to play golf or just hit some balls at the driving range.

The article say that more than 18 000 people stayed at the hotel near the golf course and several times during the year all 80 rooms been booked.

Obviously many golfers spent nights in the hotel but guests coming to their amazing Christmas Dinner also increased a lot.

Last year’s success will result in big investments in the property, 31 one rooms will be renovated as well as the restaurant and some of the public areas.

In 2020 the next big thing will happen, the addition of a large spa facility in connection to the hotel and golf course.

When I am back in Sweden in June I will as always go there for a round of golf. I like Knistad because it is always very peaceful, and even though it is an old mansion I feel the environment is very casual and relaxed.
