A-Mei, 阿妹, Chang Hui-mei

A-Mei is one of the many names adopted and stylized by the sensational Taiwanese pop artist Chang Hui-Mei. Born she was, however, with the name Zhang Hui-Mei and as Amit Kulillay, in a lower class family of eastern Taiwan. She has also adopted the titles of “Pride of Taiwan” and also the “Diva of pop music”.

Among 8 other siblings, she was the only one who developed a great love for tribal music and was fascinated by the inspirational English songs she heard on the radio. Realizing her talent, she was encouraged by her friends and family to join a contest in 1992 in which she became a finalist. A bit disheartened at first, she eventually won the contest two years later.

Her career set off in 1996, when she sang alongside Chang Yu-Sheng, and grew in popularity. She drew much attention to herself and her voice was much appreciated. She used this popularity to jump-start her career and released her first album ‘Zimei’, achieving instant success with about a million copies sold and charts’ topped for about 9 weeks straight. She went on to release her second album ‘Bad Boy’ which was even more popular and also set the record for the second highest number of copies sold. Undoubtedly, she had become the ‘next big thing’ in Asian culture.

However, soon after completing a tour of Asia in the year 2000, she became involved in a cross-straits controversy. By this time she had become a fan favorite and had released four different albums, all of them successful. Yet, when the government of China banned her from performing in the country, it was unanimously decided that she needed a break. Thus, she released a compilation of all her songs in 2001 and it wasn’t until early 2007 that she was recognized again as a great pop artist.

That goes to show, that her career faced decline since 2001 with no music reaching much popularity and even more controversies to deal with. Yet, in 2007 she released the album, Wǒ Yào Kuài Lè? And instantly shot back up the charts with it getting positive reviews. While shortly afterwards she released another great album, Star, which also got the same reaction as the last one. She continued performing in various live concerts until 2009, in which she did something so spectacular, no one could believe it.

This was the time she created the album under her native family name ‘AMIT’. What was so special about it? It was special because it was nothing like the songs she used to sing. Instead of the pop genre, she decided to make a complete rock album which, despite the sudden change, led to giant success and peaked no.1 on various charts.

Since then A-Mei has signed a deal with EMI Taiwan, participated in the largest gay parade in Asia, and has released two more albums; ‘R U Watching’ & ‘Faces of paranoia’. She has become the once renowned pop artist that she was, only being even more famous day-by-day. She has won numerous awards including the Mandarin Best Female Singer three times in total. At age 42 today, she does not consider her age as a setback. Rather, it is just another milestone as she continues to produce phenomenal music with as much enthusiasm as ever before.
